The State of App Discovery, 2026

App discovery in 2026 no longer runs through one behaviour. Search, browse, and AI-surface installs now share the funnel across six distinct doors, and only three respond to classic ASO.

methodology

Cited synthesis of published disclosures from Apple, Google, AppTweak, AppFigures, Sensor Tower and OpenAI (2023-2026). No original panel data in this brief. Every figure carries a source. Figures marked * are model estimates.

01 · Search is still the majority, but shrinking

Apple has publicly reported that ~65% of App Store downloads originate from Search. Google Play's search share, historically similar, is now diluted by AI-picked collections and Explore surfaces. Search's share of net-new installs is declining year over year across categories.

02 · AI assistants are a new install channel

ChatGPT reports 800M+ weekly users. Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot each rank in the top 20 utility apps globally. Assistant-driven app recommendation, 'best budget app,' 'best VPN', routes installs that no ASO dashboard attributes.

03 · Store AI surfaces are live

Apple's AI-generated tags shipped in the 2024-2025 cycle and feed Search + Siri suggestions. Google's Play Store ships Gemini-picked collections in Explore and category surfaces. Both are influenced by metadata phrasing and review themes.
